Concepts and fuzzy sets: Misunderstandings, misconceptions, and oversights

چکیده
The psychology of concepts has been undergoing significant changes since the early 1970s, when the classical view of concepts was seriously challenged by convincing experimental evidence that conceptual categories never have sharp boundaries. Some researchers recognized already in the early 1970s that fuzzy set theory and fuzzy logic were potentially suitable for modeling of concepts and obtained encouraging results. This positive attitude abruptly changed in the early 1980s, and since that time fuzzy set theory and fuzzy logic have been portrayed as problematic and unsuitable for representing and dealing with concepts. Our aim in this paper is to identify someof themost notorious claims regarding fuzzy set theory and fuzzy logic that have propagated through the literature on psychology of concepts and to show that they are, by and large, false. We trace the origin and propagation of these claimswithin the literature in this area. It is shown indetail that these claims are consistently erroneous and that they are based on variousmisunderstandings, misconceptions, and oversights. The ultimate purpose of this paper is to document these various erroneous claims. 2009 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Misunderstandings about the Concept of Limit among High School Seniors E. Reyhaani, Ph.D. Z. Sharifi M. Soltaani The concept of limit is one of the basic concepts in mathematics. As such, clear understanding of it is pre-requisite for learning many other concepts. However, many of high school students suffer from misunderstanding this basic concept. To identify and remedy these ...
متن کاملOn Fuzzy $e$-open Sets, Fuzzy $e$-continuity and Fuzzy $e$-compactness in Intuitionistic Fuzzy Topological Spaces
The purpose of this paper is to introduce and study the concepts of fuzzy $e$-open set, fuzzy $e$-continuity and fuzzy $e$-compactness in intuitionistic fuzzy topological spaces. After giving the fundamental concepts of intuitionistic fuzzy sets and intuitionistic fuzzy topological spaces, we present intuitionistic fuzzy $e$-open sets and intuitionistic fuzzy $e$-continuity and other results re...
متن کاملA hybrid filter-based feature selection method via hesitant fuzzy and rough sets concepts
High dimensional microarray datasets are difficult to classify since they have many features with small number ofinstances and imbalanced distribution of classes. This paper proposes a filter-based feature selection method to improvethe classification performance of microarray datasets by selecting the significant features. Combining the concepts ofrough sets, weighted rough set, fuzzy rough se...

In this paper we study two important concepts, i.e. the direct andthe inverse limit of hyperstructures associated with fuzzy sets of type 2, andshow that the direct and the inverse limit of hyperstructures associated withfuzzy sets of type 2 are also hyperstructures associated with fuzzy sets of type 2.
